Prego Problems.... and Solutions!
Gestational Diabetes
Gestational Diabetes is usually diagnosed around week 28 of pregnancy. Some women are diagnosed even earlier in pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes is either the mother's body (pancreas) is not producing enough insulin or her body cannot process the insulin she is producing. Most women can regulate Gestational Diabetes simply through diet. Your OBGYN will counsel you on what and how to eat in order to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Most women will be given a blood sugar meter and asked to take their blood sugar 3 to 4 times a day in order to see how well she is controlling her gestational diabetes and whether medication is necessary.

One of the main solutions to high blood sugar is letting go of those higher processed sugar foods like cakes, sodas and cookies. Although having an occasional sugary treat is not the end of the world. Foods with higher nutritional content are better choices. Your nutritionist will advise you on adding a protein to each meal and snacks as well as eating more often to maintain healthy stable sugar levels.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
When babies are born and the mother was diagnosed with gestational diabetes they are checked for low blood sugar by a poke to their little heel. The danger is the mother's higher blood sugar was being passed through the placenta to the fetus in the womb but once the baby is born, it no longer gets the sugar from the mother and may have a drop in sugar. Doctors will watch for any signs of the baby's dropping blood sugar.
Babies born to mommies with uncontrolled gestational diabetes can be larger than normal babies. This can make passage through the birth canal more difficult and even call for a Cesarean section.
Most mothers with well maintained and controlled gestational diabetes have healthy babies.
