Tampons and pads contain harsh chemicals that our body is taking in through the vaginal walls and genital area. They are made from Rayon and in the process of chlorine- free bleaching there are trace amounts of dioxin found. The FDA (food and drug admin) claims that the amounts are low enough as to not be harmful. The EPA (environmental protection agency) on the other hand says there is no acceptable level of exposure. Repeated contact with such a chemical is where it becomes dangerous and what do we do every month when Aunt Flow comes to town? We grab a tampon multiple times a day for around a week each month. That is definitely repeated contact. Dioxin have been found linked to cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, immune deficiencies, and endometriosis.
